This piece of Green Barthenware comes from the French Sarreguemines Digoin Green Majolica leaves pattern.
Majolica ware is a type of heavy clay pottery that is coated with enamel, adorned with paints, & then glazed.
The quirky Victorian English wares feature various decorations. In addition to its bold patterns, the earthenware is known for its vibrant colours. Items such as plates and pitchers are coated in lustrous ochers, chocolates, & a full range of greens. The first pieces of Majolica pottery were made during the 15th century on the Spanish island of Majorca, which was once known as Majolica. In the 19th century, artisans began creating majolica pottery in England with the patterns and colours that are widely recognised today.
